Originally created as a play by Federick Knott, (Dial M for Murder), "Wait Until Dark" first opened in 1966 for an extremely successful 374-performance run, before becoming a feature film starring Audrey Hepburn. Truly a classic thriller.
Sam Henderson is a photographer. He and his wife, Susy, live in a basement apartment. Sam’s responsibilities require that he be involved in frequent photography trips, often to far away places. Sam’s wife (Susy) was recently involved in an accident which left her blind. She is doing well, but is still learning to adjust to her new way of life.
As Sam returned from one of his trips, he was approached in the airport by a woman who asked if he would help her for a few minutes by holding onto a doll she had purchased for her daughter. Her asserted purpose was to hide the doll from her daughter, thus preserving her surprise gift for just the right moment. Sam agrees but the woman never returns.
We learn that the mysterious woman is actually partnered with Harry Rote, a noted criminal who has stuffed the doll with illegal drugs. It was her intent to make off with the drugs but Harry has discovered the treachery and murdered her. Sam knows nothing of this.
Not knowing what else to do, Sam takes the doll home. Unfortunately, Harry has been able to track down Sam and the doll and he with two small time hoods (Mike and Carlino) have concocted a plan whereby they can retrieve their drugs. While Sam is away on another business trip, Mike pretends to be one of his friends. He tells Susy that Sam is the focus of a police investigation and that the only way to clear him is to retrieve the doll.
To make matters more complicated, a young girl in a neighboring apartment (Gloria) visits her friend Susy and, finding the doll too much to resist, has taken it home with her.
Harry and friends will stop at nothing to achieve their purpose - including doing away with Susy, if they must. Eventually, Susy becomes suspicious of Mr. Rote and determines that she is in grave danger. But how does a blind woman defend herself? Her blindness is obviously a tremendous handicap!
Or is it?
