Our Story - and we're sticking to it!!--

The play is built around the Dr. Seuss classic, “Horton Hears a Who” but incorporates many other Seuss characters from time to time, as well, with the Cat in the Hat serving as our guide.

Act I

A small boy discovers a rather odd red-and-white striped hat. As he investigates this funny looking oddity, the ‘Cat In The Hat’ appears. The two create for us the world of Dr. Seuss and begin our story, starting with Horton the Elephant.

Horton is having a wonderful day. That is until he hears a strange noise coming from a speck of dust and concludes there must be someone on it. He rescues the speck, places it on a clover leaf and swears to protect it. The other animals of the jungle mock him mercilessly, except for Gertude McFuzz, who admires his compassion.

Horton soon discovers the dust speck is in fact a planet covered with microscopic people called Whos. They introduce themselves and their community and explain their dilemma. In addition to being unable to control where their dust speck flies, they are on the brink of war and all of their beautiful Truffula Trees have been cut down. Horton's resolve to protect the dust speck is strengthened.

Act II

Horton is conned into sitting on Mayzie’s egg while she takes a “break”. Determined to fill his new duty, he is eventually discovered by hunters, transported to New York City and auctioned off to a man from the circus. After going on the road and sitting on the egg for 51 weeks, Horton comes across Mayzie again and tries to give the egg back to her. She selfishly insists that he keep it as a rather dubious gift, wishes him a sarcastic good luck and leaves.

Feeling badly for not having properly protected the Whos (despite having tried very hard to do so), Horton declares that he'll do better than try and protect the little egg with everything he has.

Back on the dust speck planet, a battle commences. Jojo rebels against General Schmitz and abandons the army, vanishing in an explosion. The General assumes that Jojo died in the explosion and delivers the sad news to his family. The Cat reveals to the audience that Jojo did, in fact, survive. After being confronted by the Cat, Jojo finds his way home by the power of his ‘Thinks’.

Our story ends as Jojo helps save Whoville while, at the same time, convincing the jungle animals of their existence and Horton becomes a ‘father’ as a very special egg is hatched.

And they all live happily ever after! Or so we are told!
